NPR the fantastic non profit website that somehow manages to get the previews of some of the best up and coming new release’s have given us the first listen to Grimes new 4AD release ‘Visions’ and it’s an absolute cracker! Canadian Claire Boucher AKA Grimes is an electronic artist, DJ and producer and a big influence on El Rancho endorsed club night DEEP GROAN. Grimes wooed El Rancho early last year with the tracks ‘Devon’ and ‘Rosa’ from her Arbutus albums ‘Geidi Primes’ and ‘Halfaxa’. This is future pop music, eerie and seductive, dark and euphoric and built up around the looping and sampling of programmed sounds and vocals which are quite atmospherically intoxicating if you let it take you away.

Click here to listen to one of the most eagerly anticipated albums of the year and one which will no doubt top the polls at the end of the year.

GRIMES plays The Berkeley Suite, Glasgow on Monday 7th May. El Rancho caught Grimes supporting How To Dress Well at the Arches last year where after unsettling technical/sound hitch’s she pulled it right back in to a simply stunning set, albeit short.

Check the video for the totally amazing track ‘Vanessa’ from her previous Darkbloom EP.

Clocks strikes upon the hour,
And the sun begins to fade.
Still enough time to figure out,
How to chase my blues away.
I’ve done alright up ’til now,
It’s the light of day that shows me how,
And WHEN THE NIGHT FALLS,
the loneliness calls.

(Chorus:)
Oh! I wanna dance with somebody.
I wanna feel the heat with somebody.
Yeah! I wanna dance with somebody,
With somebody who loves me. (x2)

I’ve been in love and lost my senses,
Spinning through the town.
Sooner or later the fever ends,
And I wind up feeling down.
I need a man who’ll take a chance,
On a love that burns hot enough to last.
SO WHEN THE NIGHT FALLS,
My lonely heart calls.

(Chorus x2)

Somebody who… Somebody who… somebody who loves me…
Somebody who… Somebody who… to hold me in his arms…

I need a man who’ll take a chance,
On a love that burns hot enough to last.
So when the night falls,
My lonely heart calls.

(Chorus x2)

Ooh ooh! Dance! Come on baby… (laughs)
Dance! Wooo! Yeh! Dance! You dance like this… (laughs)
Woah! (dance!)

Don’t you wanna dance? (dance!) with me baby.
Don’t you wanna dance? (dance!) with me boy.
Don’t you wanna dance? (dance!) with me baby.
With somebody who loves me.

Don’t you wanna dance?
Say you wanna dance.
Don’t you wanna dance? (dance!)

Don’t you wanna dance?
Say you wanna dance.
Don’t you wanna dance? (dance!)

Don’t you wanna dance?
Say you wanna dance. (uh huh)(dance!)
With somebody who loves me.
Ooh (dance!)
Ooh-oh (dance!)
Ooh (dance!)
…with me baby…

Discovering a band called Rangers late one night back in the summer of 2010 was a rather odd occurrence. Being from Glasgow and supporting Glasgow Rangers as a kid (today Scottish football doesn’t quite live up to the golden days long gone) I was more than curious to hear the music on this album ‘Suburban Tours’. I didn’t know what to expect, but I didn’t expect this! My first reaction was a feeling that I had just woke up in the mid 80′s, in the middle of the night on a couch in America and on the TV a cop show was playing, then I became the guy the cop was looking for and this was the soundtrack to the rest of my life. I bought the album ‘Suburban Tours’ after hearing ‘Golden Triangles’ and can confirm it was the best album I heard that year (It’s still getting plenty of spins two years later). It also led me to the amazing Olde English Spelling Bee label which El Rancho has since obsessed over. ‘Suburban Tours’ feels like a ride around a hypnotic round-about playing a tape that’s close to being chewed up, but what comes out is 80′s funk bass, warped and delayed vocals, spiraling effect heavy guitars with some freakin’ amazing solos, hazy melancholic sounds to a destination unknown. It’s quite an emotive listen.

The brilliant new album ‘Pan Am Stories’ came out last year on Not Not Fun. It’s kinda off the paranoid streets and into the air but here’s a better piece on it from the dearly missed Altered Zones blog…

<Here's a brand new video for 'Zombies (Day)' from 'Pan Am Stories'.>

Super super excited about the Glasgow Film Festival which kicked off tonight with the GSFF (Short Film) and the GYFF (Youth Film) and over the next two weeks will cram in films old, new, weird, true, gory, glamorous, international and the best of British. See the whole program here:

<PThe GSFF runs through this weekend and has an entry from John Maclean (ex Beta Band) who’s short features the well endowed Michael Fassbender (Shame, Hunger, Fish Tank, Eden Lake etc) which I’m looking forward to see. Most of the shorts are grouped into showings of 6 or so films including an International and Scottish competition plus an Icelandic focus. Another film recommendation is the retrospective of original Jesus and Mary Chain bassist Douglas Hart’s music videos this Saturday at CCA.

After spending the best part of last week reading the synopsis of every film showing this year and with my highlighter pen, programme and festival calendar I’ve now manged to secure 10 films (which you can get that bit cheaper if you book a block in advance via the website, see above) which I can realistically make it to (not including High Places @ The Arches or Umberto/Organs Of Love @ SWG3). El Rancho’s choice cut’s will be Play (Free), Dragonslayer, Beauty, Extraterrestrial, Jo Nesbo’s Headhunters, Autumn Gold, St Nick, Micheal, Breathing, Crawl, Bob The Monster, Natural Selection, 3 and Death Watch. I sneaked in a couple extra in just in case the hangovers behave. If it wasn’t for a daytime job and after work musical endeavors the list could have got out of control. El Rancho’s good friend Harry, an avid film and music buff has booked 72 films this year!!! Seventy two!!!

and on that note,
CUT!

Back in December Canadian Mac Demarco put El Rancho in a stir with his “Rock n Roll Night Club” album which triumphantly gets an official release on Captured Tracks this March. Sultry drawling out Bowie-esque vocals over 4 track styled lo-fi recordings, Mac put’s you into a late night sleazy neon haze. You heard of him hear first right! (see El Rancho>Mixtapes Dec/Jan mix).

Collage Party’s new release “Dreaming In Maui (Tape)” out this month is giving us a bit of a hard on too. It has similar floaty lo-fi dark and dreamy indie rock n roll vibes as Mac Demarco which won us over instantly. It’s not miles away from the plethora of bedroom bands/artists we have found on blog after blog for the past few years however their sound is stronger and has more edge than most of the whimsical crap out there. It continues on from last years “Midnight Mind” album which is great too and is full of hushed vocals and mainly instrumental 60′s psych pop sounds.

Have a listen to the preview here and purchase the full album for $5 on Bandcamp.

Dreaming In Maui (Tape) by Collage Party
Bit of a freaky time with endless parties, Xmas & New Year, hangovers and freezin’ weather (El Rancho comes to you from Scotland BTW) plus there is never a great deal of new releases (Although ERRORS and Django Django have just brought out crackin’ new albums which I’m sure will feature in next months mix) and with most of my music consumption/attention going on DEEP GROAN’s weekly foray into the weird and wonderful…uch shut up man, here it’s!

A few of these bands released albums last year and I just caught them before the year was out. Probably the best new guitar bands I’ve heard in a long time, see Royal Headache, Natural Child, Liquor Store & UV Race.

I would like to take a moment out from regular music blogging to send my thoughts to Paul Kelly and his family at this time. Paul who developed this site and is a close friend lost his mum a few days ago after losing her fight with cancer. El Rancho and all your friends here in Scotland send their love and support to all your family in Australia and here in Scotland. Take care, Jnr x
